ABOUT : Weinstein 2005

The 2005 edition of the Weinstein Cardiovascular Development Conference will be held May 19-22, 2005 in Tucson, Arizona at the Westward Look Resort. This conference is an annual meeting for scientists investigating normal and abnormal development of the heart and vasculature as it may ultimately relate to human disease. It is a freestanding meeting unaffiliated with any society or parent organization. Interested individuals or groups from host institutions organize it on a rotating basis.

The intent of the meeting is to advance the overall field of cardiovascular development through the sharing of information and the facilitation of collaborative investigations. Topics presented at the meeting make it appropriate for basic scientists, geneticists, pediatric cardiologists, adult cardiologists, biomedical engineers (and their students and fellows) studying the cell and molecular biology of heart and vascular development in cell culture, animal models, or humans. Attendance in recent years has ranged from 270-300 attendees and includes scientists from throughout U.S as well as Asia and Europe.

A unique feature of the meeting is that, except for the keynote presentation, all speakers are selected from submitted abstracts. Investigators pay their own way to the conference and there is an emphasis on inclusion of students and junior faculty members as speakers. This keeps registration fees low and focuses the meeting on new and emerging data rather than on presentations by investigators that are repeated at other conferences. Reduced registration fees for students and postdocs and travel awards for outstanding students are also used as mechanisms to enhance the participation of these individuals at the meeting.

The Tucson meeting is hosted by the Cardiovascular Development Group at the University of Arizona. The Local Organizing Committee includes Drs. Ray Runyan, Parker Antin, Carol Gregorio, Scott Klewer, Paul Krieg, Todd Camenisch, Ron Heimark, Abigail McElhinny, and Alex Simon. Meeting registration is now open. For further information please contact Ms. Jacque Parker, Dept. of Cell Biology and Anatomy, University of Arizona, P.O. Box 245044, Tucson, AZ 85724 or any member of the local committee.
